Oloroso Sherry butt., number 2905, was distilled in October 17th 2002 and bottled in March 2017

The 14 year old Butt produced a natural cask strength of 56.2% alcohol and we elected to bottled without chill filtering and colourings.

About the distillery

Islay is renowned for producing Scotland's most distinct and recognizable Whiskies. The small island which enjoys 130 miles of coastline and it’s own micro climate has distilled Whisky with a limited number of exceptional distilleries for centuries. We were very fortunate to obtain this beautiful single butt from a private collector but due to the gravity of the butt the name had to remain secret. All that can be revealed is that the spirit was distilled on the East Shore of Islay.

The first fill Oloroso butt was used to mature the spirit for a splendid 14 year period and the light quality of the spirit produced from this distillery’s large stills have allowed for a delightfully balanced sherry influence, revealing sweet, dark and nutty qualities with ginger and cherries. We were so impressed by the wood’s condition after the Secret Islay maturation that we have opted to use the Butt again, as it has so much left to give, for the further maturation of a Royal Brackla.

We at Lady of the Glen have genuinely never been more proud to a release butt and it's been purposefully bottled at a time in it's maturation where it is ideal for sipping.

Tasting notes

Colour: Antique bronze
Nose: Salty and earthy yet sweet and floral at first. Think sea breeze on a warm spring day. Biscuits and caramel sauce with hints of old and damp fire wood.
Palate: Woody with a toffee/candy apple note initially. Hints of sea spray and fresh cut flowers come next. More caramel and biscuits notes towards the end.
Finish: Subtly sweet with woody overtones. Long and rich.

Bourbon Cask 35 was distilled on the 14th April 2006 and bottled in October 2016.

The 10 year old Bourbon Cask produced a natural cask strength of 57.6% alcohol and elected to bottle just 150 bottles, non-chill filtered with no colourings.

About the distillery

Located within the Highland Whisky region but sitting under Speyside in the Scottish midlands. The distillery is located in Auchterarder and enjoys a long history stretching as far back as 1488 where it was the site of an ancient brewery where King James IV bought ale on his way to Scone palace. The distillery proper was built in 1949 which makes it a relatively modern distillery. She takes her name from the Gaelic ‘Tullach Bhardainn’ meaning hill of warning and water from the supreme Danny Burn. The distillery currently lives outside the ownership of the big Whisky conglomerates, with its own cooperage, warehouse and bottling hall on site.

Our Bourbon Cask, was distilled during the distillery's resurgence following the 2003 acquisition. The distillery had been closed since 1995 until it was sold to an independent group of Whisky enthusiasts in 2003. Following the acquisition the distillery was brought under the assured management of John Black, a renowned figure in the Whisky industry with over 55 years of experience in the industry and who previously worked at Cardhu, Glenburgie, Miltonduff, Ardbeg, Glencadam, Balblair, Pultney, Auchentoshan, Tormore, Ardmore, Scapa and finally Tullibardine. John unfortunately passed away in 2013.

Tasting

A peach golden honey coloured Whisky from our Bourbon cask is a light dram bursting with vanilla and pears.

The burgeoning fruity nose expresses ripe peach with the sweet syrup of canned pears. A shortcrust pastry pear tarte on the palate with vanilla, green apples and the slightest powdered coconut. A peppery aftertaste with lightly dusted chocolate and more sweet baked fruits.

Sherry Butt 34 was distilled on the 14th April 2006 and bottled in October 2016.

The 10 year old Oloroso Sherry Butt produced a natural cask strength of 58.7% alcohol and elected to bottle just 200 bottles, non-chill filtered with no colourings.

Tasting

A maple syrup coloured dram which has taken wonderfully well from the Sherry Butt.

All the notes of a fruity blackberry baked tarte including sweet Scottish summer strawberries, orange peel with notes of chestnut honey, cinnamon and the slightest gingery heat. A smooth lingering aftertaste with dark chocolate and more of that delightful honey.

The 21 year old Bourbon produced a natural cask strength of 54.6% alcohol and we elected to bottle just 198 bottles, non-chill filtered with no colourings.

About the distillery

Scotland's oldest distillery is from the Highland Whisky region but is nestled near Crieff in the Scottish midlands the distillery was officially founded in 1959 but has illicit roots dating back to 1775 as a smugglers distillery. Occupying a spot near the banks of the River turret the distillery sources its water from Loch Turret.

The distillery is a core component in the blend the Famous Grouse and so very few single casks make it on the to the market except through independent bottlers. Together with modest production, the distillery runs at half capacity and is among Scotland’s smallest Scotch Whisky distilleries while it’s warehouses store multitudes of Scotland’s Whisky casks, making Glenturret Whisky among the rarest active distilleries on the market while retaining an incredibly pivotal role in the industry as a whole.

This olive gold dram is a light bodies with only slim legs that run down the glass.

Nose) heavy toffee and yellow fruits of melon and mango peel

Palate) Honey suckle, herby and crisp with papaya and honey

Finish) Fresh and light with notes with grassy hay notes

Bourbon Cask, number 44, was distilled in June 1996 and bottled in August 2016.

The 20 year old cask produced a natural cask strength of 54.3% alcohol and we elected to bottle just 108 bottles, non-chill filtered with no colourings.

About the distillery

The Speyside distillery was founded near Kingussie in 1956 within the Cairngorm Mountains of Northern Speyside. Although the distillery was built in the modern era and represents one of Scotland’s newest distilleries they use traditional Whisky production practices and the distillery itself can only produce a relatively small amount of Whisky on a yearly basis.  Taking its water from The Tromie river, the distillery is the closest distillery to the famous River Spey’s headwaters, where so many of Speyside’s plentiful distilleries take their water from.

The story of the cask

This was originally a forgotten Bourbon Cask which previously made headlines as part of a fraud investigation in 2004.

In the late 1990s a Wine Merchant promoted the sale of “Grandtully Distillery” casks to members of the public.  The name was meant to provide links to local distillery history but Grandtully Distillery never existed – it was a brass-plate address.  The casks were sold on the claim that Grandtully Whisky was highly sought after and that there was shortage of Single Malt Whisky.  The Serious Fraud office got involved and the fraudster in charge of the Wine Merchant was brought to justice while the casks remained in the ownership of the private buyers, maturing in a warehouse in Speyside.  The court case was recently settled at Southwark Crown Court and the casks, now around 20 years old, were free to be sold on.  After sitting in a warehouse since the mid 1990s, and largely forgotten about, this cask came to us through a private seller and has matured beautifully. 

This light desert dram is an intriguing olive gold colour. 

Nose – fresh and fruity with hints of buttery shortbread

Palate – Sweet vanilla with honey melon and toffee

Finish – a long lingering finish of lemon cheesecake

Sherry Butt, number 22, was distilled in April 1994 and bottled in August 2016.

The 22 year old Butt produced a natural cask strength of 61.3% alcohol and we elected to bottle just 192 bottles, non-chill filtered with no colourings.

Nose – Sumptuous rum raisin ice cream with chocolate strawberry notes

Palate – A black forest blend of fruits containing raspberries, blueberries and blackberries.  

Finish – A sweet dark cherry finish

Barrel number 654 was distilled on the 14th December 1995 and bottled in May 2016.

The 20 year old refill-Sherry cask produced a cask strength of 52.6% alc and we elected to bottle just 100 bottles.

A light bodied, honey hue Single Malt 

Nose - Amareto biscuit with vanilla and marzipan

Taste - Traditional Scottish fruit loaf or 'clootie dumpling', cinnamon and light muscovado sugar

After taste - A gentle sweet aftertaste of almonds with a fresh fruity finish

About the distillery

Rumoured to have illicit roots dating back to 1800 she was officially founded in 1825. One of only a few distilleries sited within the Lowland region with its barley rich fields, gentle hills and pure water. Her name is drawn from the Gaelic corner of the field and the water source Loch Cochno.

Bourbon barrel, number 3499, was distilled on the 14th May 1992 and bottled in May 2016. Sold out July 2016

The 23 year old cask produced natural cask strength of 51.1% alc and we elected to bottle just 130 bottles, non –chill filtered with no colourings.

About the distillery

The obscure distillery of Aultmore takes her name from the Gaelic ‘big burn’ in reference to the burn that runs near the distillery. Sitting above Keith, she lies surrounded by dense fog in the wonderfully natural and idyllic terrain of Northern Speyside.

Aultmore was constructed over a century ago in 1895 by Benrinnes-owner Alexander Edward although the first spirit was distilled in 1897, the same year Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published and the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee!

Unfortunately Aultmore failed to escape the ruin of the infamous Pattison Crisis which brought the industry to its knees and resulted in the closure of many of Scotland’s distilleries. Closed until 1903 the distillery was forced into silence again when Britain halted distilling in the War years of 1914 to 1918, as it similarly did from 1795 to 1797 which impacted Tobermory, in order to avoid using grain that would be better used in the war effort. The distillery resumed activity under new ownership in 1923.

Under her current owners Aultmore has not enjoyed the notoriety she deserves as she has mainly been used in blends, with that in mind a rare single cask release of Aultmore carries a prestigious weight of intrigue.

As soon as this Braeval enters the glass, deep fruits and heavy aromas of butterscotch flood the senses to release a delicate floral bouquet. The bold fruits stand proudly on the palate with sweet spices supporting. A delightfully thick, mouth coating malt that lingers on the palate delightfully. Distilled 20th December 1994 and bottled September 2015. Cask number 165691 was aged in bourbon barrel for for 20 years and retains a natural cask strength of 47.7%. The cask yielded a tiny 163 bottles.

(n) Deep charred fruits, obvious butterscotch & vanilla. Floral notes underneath.

(p) Thick, full and mouth coating. Christmas cake richness with heavy fruits and sweet spice.

About the distillery

The slightly obscure Southern Speyside distillery also known as Braeval, was founded relatively recently in 1973. It is Scotland's highest distillery sitting at an altitude of 350m and occupies a spot near the Glenlivet distillery, which to avoid confusion was the reason the distillery was renamed Braeva in 1994l.
